The tiger is one of the most magnificent and imperiled animals on the planet — but their bones are literally being ground to paste in Vietnam to make an unproven painkiller used in China.
Ninety-seven percent of the world’s tigers have been lost in just over a century, with as few as 3,200 remaining in the world.
But that hasn’t stopped unscrupulous smugglers and killers from continuing the illegal trade in tiger parts. Even as more and more tiger habitat is lost, these criminals are killing some of the last of the great cats on the planet and fueling a vicious cycle that can only end in extinction.
Vietnam, one of the least environmentally regulated countries in southeast Asia, is a natural hub for the trade of tiger parts. The country’s bureaucrats reportedly even accept bribes in the form of tiger paste and other products from imperiled species.
