Latest figures from the Office for National Statistics show a drop in the number of people on company payroll in Wales.
The latest data shows the number of people on payroll in Wales was 1,312,206 in July 2025, a drop of -8,376 (-0.63%) from the same month last year.
However, wages continued to rise. The median monthly salary stood at £2,394, up £123 (5.42%).
Overall payroll stood in at 30,285,820, down -169,987 (-0.49%).
Paul Hebden, Director of WageSight, said: “The last few months have seen a sharp increase in the rate of cuts to payroll in Wales, which largely reflects the picture elsewhere in the UK, with companies cutting back elsewhere in the UK.
“However, the picture on wages remains better with salaries for those still in employment just managing to outpace inflation which stood at 4.1% in June.“
Employment down in nine out of 10 months during last year
Over the past 12 months, employment fell in 9 months and rose in two. Median wages have been rising for 7 consecutive months. Average monthly wage growth over the last three months was 0.25%.
