CARMARTHENSHIRE licensing officers have linked up with Dyfed Powys Police to undertake taxi checks.

During the first two autumn rugby internationals, county council licensing officers and traffic police carried out a series of checks.

A total of 39 vehicles were stopped and checked. The results of the checks were that two vehicles were suspended, three were given deferred suspensions and nine vehicles were found to be in breach of their licence conditions.

This is part of an ongoing initiative with the local authority and Dyfed Powys Police that will continue up to and over the Christmas period.

Licensing committee chair Cllr Tom Theophilus said: “We are doing seasonal checks and want to remind the taxi trade of their responsibilities and to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy and comply with licensing conditions.”

Executive board member for public protection Cllr Jim Jones said: “This enforcement exercise has also given officers the opportunity to assess the overall standards of taxis and their drivers in the county.

“It’s pleasing to note that some operators now provide their staff with company tee shirts and jumpers and they must be complimented on their appearance’.
