A two-day homage to the harp takes place at the National Botanic Garden of Wales on Saturday and Sunday, July 27 and 28.

The weekend-long celebration of the national instrument of Wales will feature talks, recitals and have-a-go, hands-on sessions for people of all abilities and all ages.

Organiser and harpist Shelley Fairplay said: “The weekend provides an excellent opportunity for people who have never played before to try the harp. There’s a workshop that includes demonstrations of pedal, celtic and lap harps and then a session where you can try your hand at playing a 17-string lap harp.”

The weekend features six workshops, a number of recitals by Shelley, a lecture and demonstration on the harp and its history, as well as a special mystery trail of discovery for young Harp Detective’s and a harp drawing competition.

Shelley will also be launching her brand new CD, entitled “The Cherished Harp”, which will be available for sale during the event. There is also a chance to win a 17-string lap harp, the prize in a competition running on Shelley’s Facebook page.

Event organiser David Hardy said: “Shelley is a regular performer at the Garden and a very welcome sight – and sound. She plays an alluring array of styles and genres, from classical through to show, film, jazz and pop.”

He added: “She has put together a terrific two-day event which we hope to make a regular fixture in the Garden’s events calendar.”

There are two 45-minute workshops and one 15-minute ‘Tiny Hands-On’ session (for children aged 2-6) per day. Anyone wanting to book a place on any of the workshops, should call 01558 667149. A place on the workshop is just £2 but booking will include Garden admission. There is a maximum of 30 places per workshop.

The 15-minute children’s session are free but booking will include Garden admission.

Normal Garden admission is £8.50 for adults (£7 concessions), £4.50 for children with a family ticket (for 2 adults and up to 4 children) priced at £21.
