Caws Teifi Cheese who have a stall in Carmarthen Indoor Market have done it again.

At the British Cheese Awards ceremony on May 26 , the annual Oscars of the cheese world, Caws Teifi Cheese smashed their own record by winning the Best Welsh Cheese for a record 6th time with their most renowned cheese Celtic Promise.

Celtic Promise is a Caerphilly type washed-rind cheese and was developed by John Savage-Onstwedder of Teifi Farmhouse Cheese in Ceredigion, Wales. Since 1998 it has won the prestigious title of Supreme Champion twice at the British Cheese Awards, five times the best Semi-Soft Cheese in Britain and more than 10 Gold medals, making it the most highly awarded cheese in Britain!

An unpasteurised, semi-soft cheese made from RAW cows’ milk, it is shaped like a dumpling. During the process, the cheese is ripened in cider to get the slightly moist, sticky orange-red rind and fruity smell. As this cheese ripens in about eight weeks, the soft buttery texture develops a pungent aroma and a delicate, mild flavour. Cheese connoisseurs say about it “once bitten forever smitten”.

John Savage-Onstwedder, who did not attend the award at the Royal Bath and West Showground as he was judging another cheese competition in London, was delighted when he heard the news.

“To win the Dougal Campbell Memorial Trophy for the Best Welsh Cheese for a record sixth time is a testament to the skill and dedication of the whole team here at Caws Teifi Cheese. It also reflects the quality of the milk produced here in Ceredigion and we must give credit to Mr and Mrs Williams of Cilcert Farm,  Aberaeron who produce the milk that makes our cheese and also Llaeth Cymraeg, the Welsh Milk Company who deliver it fresh every day. That the most highly awarded cheese in Britain is produced here in Ceredigion proves that Welsh cheeses are something we can all be proud of”.

Celtic Promise and other Caws Teifi Cheeses are all available at their stall in Carmarthen’s Indoor Market.
