Plaid Cymru Shadow Minister for Education, Sian Gwenllian MS said,

“Clear leadership is now needed from the Welsh Government, with a proper focus on the digital divide and on supporting those pupils being left behind most.

“A switch to Centre Assessed Grades should be made immediately – it is more realistic and fairer to all to forget external and internal assessments altogether and use Centre Assessed Grades. Up to now the Welsh Government has announced changes to spring internal assessments only, but an early decision is needed on summer too to allow time for preparation. It should be decided now and then moderation methods can be agreed on. Last year’s fiasco and U-turn must be avoided at all costs.

“The Welsh Government must plan now for the gradual and safe reopening of schools, putting in place safety measures, and should lay out plans for a vaccination programme for schools staff.

“An Education Recovery Plan should also be published which lays out how the effects of the pandemic on education and the wellbeing of pupils will be addressed.”
