Following the recent announcement from the Department for Transport about lowering the drink-driving limit for the first time in more than 50 years, Mike Thompson, Chief Operating Officer at Leasing Options, shares:
“The drink drive limit has not changed in the UK since 1967, so therefore many people will not be clued up on the specific measurements of the drink-drive limit. As it stands, the maximum permitted blood alcohol content (BAC) for drivers in both England and Wales is set at 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood (equivalent to 35mg per 100ml of breath). The new proposed lower drink-drive limit will be reduced from 35 to 22 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath. As it stands, the current limit is actually among the highest in Europe, so if this change takes place, it would bring both England and Wales in line with European standards, lower the number of fatal accidents, and indicate that even small amounts of alcohol can affect driving. We welcome any proposals that put road safety first. Lowering the drink-drive limit would bring England and Wales in line with much of Europe, helping to reduce accidents caused by alcohol. For those leasing a vehicle, these changes also serve as an important reminder of the contractual responsibilities that come with it. If you lose your licence during your lease term, your contract does not automatically end, and you remain liable for the monthly payments. The vehicle must also remain insured at all times. In situations where you can no longer drive, the process would be to request an early settlement figure should you wish to return the vehicle before the end of your agreement. Safe and responsible driving is about protecting yourself, your passengers, and your financial commitments.”
