Cold weather has lots of consequences – including on our teeth. Cold weather makes your teeth contract, exposing sensitive areas and triggering sharp pain, especially if there are hidden cracks, decay or gum recession.
We have comment below from Dr Deepak Aulak. Dr Deepak is a multi-award-winning dentist with a special interest in aesthetic and cosmetic dentistry. A King’s College London graduate, he has treated a wide range of patients – from celebrities and international influencers to those with complex, high-needs cases.
Doctor Deepak said the following “With temperatures dropping well below freezing across the UK, we often see a rise in people experiencing sudden tooth sensitivity or sharp pain when outside. Cold weather can reveal problems that have been building for months – a tiny crack, a worn filling, or gum recession. If you feel repeated zingers of pain when you step into the cold or drink something warm afterwards, don’t ignore it. Cover your mouth outdoors, avoid sudden temperature changes, and if symptoms last more than a day or two, book a check-up. It’s always easier to treat an issue early rather than face a dental emergency during winter.”
1. Cover your mouth in freezing temperatures
2. Avoid switching from extreme cold to very hot drinks
3. Do not ignore new tooth pain in the cold
4. Keep hydrated even in cold weather
5. Use desensitising toothpaste properly
6. Don’t clench your teeth in the cold
7. Check on older or vulnerable people
