As rainy and unsettled weather continues across the UK, motorists are being warned of the costs of neglecting a vehicle showing signs of damp and mould.

With UK winters getting wetter, savings experts at Tiger.co.uk are sharing five key ways to help stop a damp car from becoming a costly drain on finances. If left untreated, damp and mould could damage a vehicle’s interior and electrical systems, while also creating potential insurance issues.

These systems range from basic components like window controls to more critical onboard electronics such as airbags and the engine control unit (ECU), which if affected, can create additional safety risks. Moisture in a vehicle not only leads to costly repairs and safety issues but is also unpleasant for drivers and passengers, creating damp smells, reduced visibility and even potential health risks. Breathing in spores from mould build-up can cause respiratory issues and may lead to asthma and serious infections, which can be particularly harmful to children.

Ian Wilson, Managing Director and car insurance expert at Tiger.co.uk said: “A lot of drivers underestimate just how much damp can affect their vehicle. What may start as a lingering bad smell can quickly lead to mould, and by that point, damp could be causing far more damage than meets the eye. Regular checks and acting as soon as there are any signs of damp is key to saving money and protecting road users. Neglecting a damp vehicle will likely increase repair costs and could also affect the vehicle’s resale value – reducing its worth.Poor vehicle maintenance may also affect insurance cover as drivers are required to take good care of the vehicle and ensure it is roadworthy at all times – failure to do so could void the cover and leave drivers unprotected. If the damp is bad enough that it causes condensation, a lack of visibility could result in fines, penalty points and increased insurance premiums. It’s important that drivers take extra time to clear their screen and windows – making sure they have a full view of the road before setting off.”

There are quick and easy steps to help prevent damp, such as using dehumidifiers and absorbents, washing and polishing the windscreen regularly, using the heat with the air conditioning on, washing off moisture attracting debris from the vehicle exterior and even something simple like getting into the habit of opening the windows on a dry day.

One of the most important things to do is find out why the car is damp. It could be caused by all sorts of issues from sealant problems to coolant leaks.Simple measures like leak testing by hosing the exterior of the car then checking inside for any additional moisture, could help identify the source – if drivers can’t find the reason for the dampness, it’s sensible to visit a professional and get a diagnosis before issues escalate.

Five ways a damp car could cost you:

Rust and mechanical damage

Ignoring damp in vehicles can lead to rust build-up, which may cause problems if it affects mechanical components, potentially resulting in failed MOTs. Moisture can also seep into wiring, the ECU, transmission system, airbags or the seals around doors and windows, creating both safety risks and costly damage.

Insurance implications

Prolonged damp-related damage may not be covered by insurance if it’s linked to poor maintenance. Mechanical or electrical failures caused by moisture may be noted as an MOT advisory, indicating potential safety risks that should be addressed promptly, and if ignored could lead to claims being refused.

Health risks

Damp in vehicles can cause the growth of mould, which may pose significant health risks, particularly for young children. Inhalation of spores can lead to respiratory problems, especially for those with pre-existing health conditions.

Interior and upholstery damage

Mould can be difficult to remove and prevent once it takes hold, particularly if it reaches the padding inside the seats. This can result in significant upholstery costs, potentially running into thousands of pounds.***

Reduce resale value

A vehicle affected by damp or mould, or showing signs of damage caused by moisture, could see a significant reduction in resale value. Regular maintenance is key to preserving your vehicle’s worth.
