Students get down to business for Entrepreneurial Week 2011

As part of Global Entrepreneurship Week 2011, students at Coleg Sir Gâr’s Graig campus are focussing their business ideas towards the regeneration of Llanelli town centre.

In a Dragons’ Den style competition, around six groups of students will be pitching their ideas to Llanelli town centre manager Andrew Shufflebottom with business plans to develop an empty shop in the town.

The winning team will represent Coleg Sir Gâr at the all-Wales Global Enterprise Challenge (GEC) in Cardiff, which they won best presentation in last year. Also judging the pitches will be young entrepreneurs and business development representatives from the college.

Eleanor Shaw, entrepreneurship coordinator said: “Traditionally, different courses have competed against each other, but this year we’re changing tack and mixing students up. Next week, there’ll be a hub of entrepreneurial activity as students work on business ideas with Welsh Government role models and the winning team from last year’s GEC. The day will reflect the activity and buzz of the all-Wales Cardiff event but on a smaller scale.

“This project is relevant and local, so it will be interesting to see what ideas come out and it’s great collaboration for us and the town

centre.”

This year, Entrepreneurship Week is being hosted in the UK by Youth Business International. Their chief executive Andrew Devenport says:

“There is a great need to provide opportunities today that help entrepreneurs pursue their dreams and build the businesses of tomorrow.

Global Entrepreneurship Week 2011 is kick-starting the conversations that are needed to make this happen.”
