Wales are hoping to book their spot in the 2025 UEFA European Championship in Switzerland. First and foremost, they are looking for a strong UEFA Women’s Nations League campaign, which kicks off later this year.
Wales Miss Out on the 2023 World Cup
The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand is taking place. The tournament has been throwing up plenty of thrills and spills in the Southern Hemisphere. Republic of Ireland were knocked out in the group stage, but England took maximum points in their group and are through to the knockouts. Looking at today’s football odds, the Lionesses are the favourites to win the tournament. England are priced at Women’s World Cup 2023 odds of 13/5 to go all the way.
Wales failed to qualify for the 2023 tournament, but they had a memorable qualifying campaign. The Dragons finished runners-up to France, collecting 20 points. The Welsh won six times, seeing off Greece, Estonia, and Kazakhstan.
Wales edged out Slovenia in the race for a play-off spot in Group I. The Welsh beat Bosnia and Herzegovina in Cardiff but lost to Switzerland at the second hurdle.
Wales also went close to qualifying for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 tournament. They went up against the likes of Norway and Northern Ireland in a tight Group C. The Norwegians won the group with 18 points, while Norn Iron took second. Northern Ireland and Wales finished level on points, but the Welsh lost out on the head-to-head record.

Wales are in the top section of the 2023-24 Nations League, facing some stiff opposition in Group A3. They will battle with Germany, Denmark, and Iceland, with the winners progressing to the Nations League Finals. The third-place team will enter the relegation play-offs, and the bottom nation will be relegated to League B.
The Nations League could be huge in Wales’ quest to reach the Euros. They start the campaign with a trip to Iceland in September and welcome the Danes to Cardiff City Stadium a few days later. The toughest Group A3 matchup will be against Germany in October.
Wales have never reached a World Cup or a European Championship, but they are certainly heading in the right direction. Since taking over in March 2021, Gemma Grainger has pulled off some great results.
Wales recently lost to the United States, which was their first defeat since the heartbreaking loss to Switzerland in the World Cup qualifying play-offs. Prior to the USA defeat, the Welsh had won two and drawn four of six.

A performance to be proud of for Cymru but it’s the hosts who come out on top in San Jose.

Wales will want to keep the momentum ticking ahead of the Nations League and Euro 2025 qualifiers. Can they kick off the inaugural Women’s Nations League with a win against Iceland in Reykjavik in September?
