How to make staying in feel like a treat

Many of us find it difficult to actively do less. But a night at home can be just what you need when the world outside feels relentlessly busy. You give yourself space to unwind without forcing anything, away from social and professional pressures. With just a little intention, an evening in can feel indulgent rather than routine.

If you need a small reset, try these ideas to enjoy the kind of quiet pleasure you might usually associate with a weekend away.

Set the mood with small comforts

Your home life might be part of the problem, of course, so start by making your space more soothing.

Swap harsh overhead lights for softer lamps or warm-toned bulbs to relax your eyes and encourage your shoulders to drop. Choose a scent and let it drift through the room with a candle or diffuser. These touches create an environment that feels inviting rather than functional.

If the weather’s cool – or relentlessly wet – wrap up in a textured throw or slip into your softest socks.

Enjoy your favourite meal

Food anchors an evening at home, and cooking can turn into a small pleasure if you allow yourself time to enjoy it.

Instead of grabbing something quick, choose a dish you love and prepare it with a sense of ritual. You might simmer a rich pasta sauce or make tacos with all the sides, for example. Each step brings its own reward, from the scent of garlic in a pan to plating it beautifully for yourself.

If you don’t feel like cooking, order from a place that always hits and set the table properly – or tuck in on the sofa. We won’t judge!

Choose a special solo activity

Once you’ve eaten, choose an activity that feels different from your usual wind-down habits. Read a novel you’ve meant to start, pick up a sketchbook or cosy up to a new film that matches your mood.

If you want to be more playful, pick up a pad and lose yourself – or pop onto a bingo site for a few quick, light games.  The key is to choose something that engages your attention without demanding too much from you.

Pamper yourself

Why not throw in a little self-care to turn a simple night into something luxurious? After your activity, run a warm bath with oils that soften your skin, or take time with your skincare routine instead of rushing through it.

These gestures remind you that you deserve care, even on quiet evenings when no one else is around. Your body and mind will respond with gratitude!

Whatever your ideal evening, staying in with intention becomes restorative rather than routine. Combine a few of the elements above to map out something you genuinely look forward to at the end of a busy week.
