Welsh Conservatives have backed a campaign to ensure football supporters across Wales get the opportunity to welcome back Wales’ Euro 2016 heroes to the country.
Chris Coleman’s men saw their participation at the tournament come to an end on Wednesday evening, following a stunning run to the semi-finals; which included knock-out wins over Northern Ireland and Belgium.
The team are expected to return to a hero’s welcome on Friday, with an open top bus tour and public celebration event at the Cardiff City Stadium.
However, local campaigner Andrew Atkinson has launched a campaign to ensure North Wales-based fans have the opportunity to welcome back the players, and the initiative has been backed by Welsh Conservatives.
North Wales AM Mark Isherwood said:
“It is vital that all of Wales has the opportunity to pay tribute to the incredible efforts of the Welsh players and staff, and this grassroots campaign has my full support.
“The endeavours of the Welsh team, both in qualifying for the tournament, and at the finals in France, have inspired the entire nation.
“It would be fantastic to see the Welsh Government working with the Football Association of Wales and other stakeholders to ensure an event in North Wales, following Friday’s homecoming in Cardiff.”
Shadow Secretary for the Economy, Transport and Sport, Russell George AM, added:
“The support for the Welsh team in France has been sensational, with fans from Mold to Monmouth, and Holyhead to Hengoed playing their part in this historic achievement.
“Following the tournament, it’d be fantastic for people in all parts of Wales to have the opportunity to welcome the team back and for players and supporters to show their mutual appreciation, after an incredible few weeks.
“This could also play a key role in encouraging participation in sport, improving public health levels and creating an ongoing legacy for our elite athletes.”
