Travelling throughout Britain gives the discerning traveller a chance to immerse themselves in centuries of history through art, culture, gorgeous landscapes and, of course, the architecture and design of the still-standing homes of royalty and aristocrats. While some of these timeworn homes are only open for tours, if at all, a large percentage of the functioning castles and manor homes all across the UK are open to guests for luxury stays and a chance to step back in time. If you’re a history, architecture, antiques, culture, or geography buff who loves to experience the highest level of luxury wherever they are, these are the castles and manor homes across the UK that are must-see stops on your next UK trip.

Luxury Country Manor Stays

Cowley Manor, Cheltenham, England

A mere 17 minutes from bustling Cheltenham (and only a 6.5 km drive from Gloucestershire Airport, which welcomes VIPs and private jet flights with suitable luxury and enthusiasm), you’ll find the stately Cowley Manor. Though the home is 18th-century, it has had a modern makeover that was aimed at bringing in a younger crowd. That said, the makeover hasn’t stripped this stunning house of its classic charm nor of any of the luxury and refinement that each guest experiences. The makeover in question was carried out by design superstar Dorothée Meilichzon, with endless quirky references to Alice in Wonderland, which, legend has it, was inspired by a walk that Lewis Caroll took in the property’s gardens. Mushrooms, rabbits, and checkerboard patterns call back to the book in the common areas and rooms alike, making for a unique stay. The menu at the restaurant and the cocktail bar’s blue, lava stone bar are other highlights: mixologist-created drinks, both classic and modern, and a menu that features English country garden herbs and veggies make Cowley Manor a delicious experience.

History and architecture buffs will still get their fill at this beautiful and unique manor house. The facade, the gardens, and the lake are all maintained in a relaxed, classically English manner. A combination of exquisitely luxurious bedding, charming shaded garden chairs, the well-equipped in-house spa, and English charm makes this a must-visit location.

Gleneagles, Auchterarder, Scotland

A picture of refinement, classical sensibilities, and all the warmth of Scottish hospitality, Gleneagles is just as much in demand as it was when it first opened in 1924. If your only wish is to enjoy the unspoiled wilderness, dine like royalty, and then sink into the plushest furnishings and linens, this is the place for you. Indoors reflects the outdoors here, with dark, polished woods and a colour palette from deep forest green to faint pinks and reds and spotless cream. The beds are four-poster, the fireplaces are numerous, and the windows are wide to take in the endless views. Guests can sip pre-dinner cocktails and listen to piano in the American Bar and dine on Scottish (and international) cuisine at the Andrew Fairlie 2-Michelin-star restaurant on the manor. There’s also the Bernam Brasserie for more informal dining — perfect for a family dinner.

Known as The Glorious Playground, Gleneagles is surrounded by 850 acres of exquisite Scottish countryside, including glens, lochs, and golf courses. During the summer, there are comfortable loungers by the pool, and the spa beckons when the weather is cold outside. Ride one of the hotel bikes, go off-roading in a mini Range Rover, try falconry, or just take a stroll to curb your wanderlust and warm up in front of a roaring fire when you’re done. The warm, historical ambience of Gleneagles and the majesty of its grounds cannot possibly be overstated.

Luxury Castle Stays

Bovey Castle, North Bovey, Dartmoor, England

Luxury travel in the UK, from private flights to car services and exclusive experiences, is at its peak in the English countryside. Take Bovey Castle, for example. This luxurious castle and its accompanying private estate lodges take the concept of a luxury stay to another level. Surrounded by 275 acres of gorgeous countryside, tumbling waterfalls, and hanging rock formations, the castle has a lot to offer walkers and explorers thanks to its location in the easternmost part of Dartmoor National Park. There’s an extensive golf course (18 holes) to play through as well, and that’s all before you even get to the interior of the castle and its outbuildings.

The castle was built in the Neo-Elizabethan style, and that sensibility has been carried through in the design while still managing to keep it incredibly comfortable and welcoming to modern visitors. The scale is grand: huge stone fireplaces, gleaming oak panelling, winding mahogany stairs, rich textiles, and plush furnishings. The service matches the grand aesthetic too, from the porters to the activity (archery, falconry, gin making, and more) guides: exemplary on every level. While the castle and its staff are top class, the atmosphere is relaxed and informal, with Wellington boots available for tramping through the mud on long walks with the dogs, who are welcome guests as well! If a day of pampering is more your speed, take a dip in the gorgeous heated pool (art deco style) or spend the day at the refreshing, rejuvenating spa or in the sauna.

Rowton Castle, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England

If you’re looking for a place to enjoy a little romance with the one you love or romanticise your own solo travels again, you’ve found it in Rowton Castle. This 17th location is overflowing with the character and sophistication that seasoned travellers have come to expect from luxury UK destinations. A collection of sumptuous armchairs dotted all over the castle, gorgeously wood-panelled walls, and a collection of both artworks and quirky murals make what could be a forbidding destination into something incredibly warm and welcoming. Since the hotel is predominantly used as a wedding venue these days, when bookings are open for private guests, you know you’ll be treated to a calm and restful escape rather than an overbooked tourist trap. Seasonal menus in the Cedar Restaurant or appetisers on the garden terrace served by exceptional staff are just heavenly.

History is on display not only in Rowton Castle but in all of the day-trip-worthy areas directly adjacent to it. Fifteen minutes away is charming Shrewsbury, for leisurely teas and strolls. Shropshire and Welsh Hills are equidistant and ready to be explored. If you’d prefer to stay closer to home, why not explore the 17 acres of countryside around the castle? Visit the 300-year-old Cedar of Lebanon or relax on the bright green grass.

Historical Luxury

Whatever your travel experience, whatever your preference of activity or food, these historically and culturally rich, luxurious homes and castles are ready and waiting to welcome you to the UK’s gorgeous countryside.
