Joe’s Plant Place, based in Caerphilly, has been named Consumer Product of the Year at the Wales StartUp Awards 2026 and has also been announced as a finalist in the Allica Bank Great British Entrepreneur Awards in the Consumer Entrepreneur of the Year (Wales) category.

What started as a small market stall has grown into an award-winning independent horticultural retailer with a mission to make plants more accessible through retail, education and community engagement.

Joe’s Plant Place has been named the regional winner in the Consumer Products StartUp of the Year category at the UK StartUp Awards 2026 (https://startupawards.uk/) for Wales. The business has successfully secured its place to represent the region at the UK national final, which will take place at the prestigious Ideas Fest on 9th September 2026 at Champneys, Tring, Hertfordshire.

The UK StartUp Awards was launched to recognise the booming startup scene across the UK, which has accelerated significantly in recent years with around 832,000 new businesses registered in the UK in 2025. Over 900 businesses have been shortlisted for this year’s UK StartUp Awards across ten nations and regions. The contribution of these firms, all of which were started in the last three years, is significant, having created nearly 5,000 new jobs since they were established and generating annual sales of over £150 million.

Joe’s Plant Place is an independent horticultural retailer and education business dedicated to making plants accessible to everyone. Founded in 2024 by Joe, the business began after he experienced the positive impact plants had on his own wellbeing while working a full-time job. What started as a small market stall has evolved into a thriving community hub that helps people of all ages build confidence through workshops, children’s events, and expert advice. By focusing on the ethos of Plants, People, and Community, the business ensures that horticulture is welcoming and enjoyable, whether a customer is buying their first houseplant or attending a workshop to reconnect with nature.

“Plants changed my life, so I built a business to help them change other people’s too,” says founder Joe. “What started as a hobby and a small market stall has grown into something far bigger than I ever imagined. Joe’s Plant Place has never been just about selling plants. Every plant we sell, workshop we host and child we inspire brings us one step closer to our mission of helping people build confidence, improve wellbeing and create a community where everyone feels welcome. We are so proud to take this vision to the UK national final at Ideas Fest on 9th September 2026.”

The victory marks a significant period of momentum for the solo entrepreneur, who has successfully transformed the business from a local market stall into an award-winning retail presence. Despite being a team of one, Joe has welcomed thousands of customers and expanded the brand’s reach by serving adults, children, and corporate clients. This latest accolade follows a year of high achievement, including being named a finalist in the Allica Bank Great British Entrepreneur Awards.

“Joe’s Plant Place after navigating the challenge of closing and reopening in a stronger location, the business has built a loyal customer base, and developed a model with clear potential beyond the shop floor. The judges recognised a consumer products startup with resilience, community spirit and a thoughtful approach to making plant care more accessible.” – the UK StartUp Awards judging panel.

Professor Dylan Jones-Evans OBE, co-founder of the UK StartUp Awards (https://startupawards.uk/), said:

“New businesses are the driving force behind any thriving economy, generating employment, pioneering innovation, and contributing to prosperity right across the UK. Our regional winners represent the very best of British entrepreneurial talent, and they have earned their place at the national final on merit alone. We look forward to seeing them take to the main stage at Ideas Fest on 9th September, where one of them will be crowned the UK’s best startup in their category.”

The UK StartUp Awards (https://startupawards.uk/), founded by Frankie James and Professor Dylan Jones-Evans as part of Ideas Community, is the UK’s largest independent startup awards programme. Now in its fifth year, the awards received over 2,000 entries in 2026. Regional winners compete at the national final, held at Ideas Fest (https://ideasfest.uk/), aka the Glastonbury of Business, on 9th-10th September 2026 at Champneys, Tring, Hertfordshire.
