STATEMENT FROM GMB WALES AND SOUTH WEST ON TODAY’S MEMORANDUM OF
UNDERSTANDING SIGNED BY TATA AND THYSSENKRUPP GROUP
GMB WALES AND SOUTH WEST HAS TENTATIVELY WELCOMED TODAY’S
ANNOUNCEMENT
JOHN PHILLIPS, REGIONAL SECRETARY FOR GMB WALES AND SOUTH WEST, SAID:
“We tentatively welcome the Memorandum from TATA and Thyssenkrupp
group to enter into a Joint venture that will help safeguard the steel
industry and 4000 jobs in Port Talbot.
“The announcement will be welcome news to thousands of families
across Port Talbot as well as Llanelli, Llanwern, Shotton and
Caerphilly, however we will be monitoring the deal closely and seeking
further assurances on jobs and investment in the area.
“The price of steel is starting to rise again, highlighting the GMB’s
long held belief that there is a future for the steel making industry
in South Wales and across the UK.
“This is also underlined by TATA’s stated aim to invest 1Billion to
maintain the Blast Furnaces.
“It’s vital now that we get a commitment from TATA Steel to reline
Blast Furnace Number 5 which will help safeguard the Industry in Port
Talbot and the UK as a whole.”
