Speed Reduction Initiative, Drefach

On Friday 28th March, local neighbourhood policing officers teamed up with Carmarthenshire County Council’s Road Safety unit and Drefach Primary School pupils to target speeding vehicles outside the primary school.

As part of the speed-reduction initiative, a Speed Indicating Device (S.I.D) was used and a total of 10 vehicles were found to be traveling in excess of the 20 mph speed limit and were stopped by police officers. The drivers were then given the option of speaking to the pupils to explain why they were speeding outside their school, or to receive a fixed penalty notice.

All drivers opted to speak to the pupils who then asked them four questions, including, were you aware that you were driving faster than the 20mph speed limit for this area?

On completion of the questions, the pupils then informed the drivers of some very uncompromising facts relevant to their speed, such as at 20mph there is about a one in 40 chance of killing a child.

Each driver was then given a pack, including the ‘Know your Speed’ booklet and a letter explaining why they were stopped.

PCSO Rhys Howells said

“This was a very effective and successful speed-reduction initiative which we will continue to use throughout the coming months along with regular patrols and speed checks in an attempt to encourage drivers to consider their speed whilst driving through Drefach.”
