Plaid Cymru opposes plans to remove the Burry Port railway footbridge.

Plaid Cymru Burry Port + Pembrey Branch have stated their opposition to Network Rail plans to remove the Burry Port railway footbridge and are urging residents to make their views known.

The group said:

“The existence of the railway bridge is so obviously vital in enabling people to cross the railway!”

“Its potential loss will be devastating and inconvenient for the whole Community.  Network Rail has a moral duty to maintain the bridge as it forms a key part of our Town’s heritage.”

“The bridge is of a classical Victorian design and therefore certainly such a bridge should be protected and preserved as one of the finest examples of the Great Western Railway’s history.”

The branch added:

“The cost of keeping the bridge painted and repaired is minimal in comparison to the contribution it gives the Community, both in service and as a historical landmark.”

Network Rail has wrongly claimed that the bridge is rarely used, the bridge is in constant use daily by local residents within the Community who deserve to have their views on the proposals addressed.  There is very little consultation with the local Community and that is disappointing.”

We thoroughly believe that this is part of a cost-cutting exercise being implemented nationally by Network Rail solely to save money.  However we in Plaid Cymru stand with the people of Burry Port in firmly opposing such changes.”
