A special service to mark Victory in Japan (VJ) Day will be held at Llandaff Cathedral on Sunday 16 August at 3:30pm, First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones has announced today.
Commemorating the allied victory in Japan and the end of World War 2 in 1945, the service has been jointly organised by the Welsh Government and Cardiff Council in conjunction with Llandaff Cathedral.
The First Minister will read at the service, together with D. Hugh Thomas CBE DL Honorary Consul for Japan.
Speaking ahead of the event Carwyn Jones said:
“We must never forget the sacrifice allied forces made for our freedoms during World War 2.
“Victory in Japan by the allied forces brought to an end six years of conflict which saw the tragic loss of so many lives and the destruction of so many communities across the world.
“Their heroics in battle, often so very far from home, will always have a special place in our hearts and it’s important we remember and show our gratitude for their service.”
The Rt. Hon. The Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Cllr David Walker said:
“VJ Day is a hugely significant event, allowing us to remember those who lost their lives during World War 2 and show our gratitude for their sacrifice. Commemorating this anniversary is a fitting tribute to those who did so much to defend this country and ensure victory in Japan.”
Phil Jones, Area Manager Wales, The Royal British Legion, said:
“Over the years, veterans who served in the Far East have expressed that they’ve often felt overlooked or forgotten. While people at home were celebrating Victory in Europe and returning to their normal lives, those fighting in the Far East were still at war.
“These 70th anniversary commemorations are an opportunity for the nation to show their gratitude to these “forgotten” veterans, and acknowledge the endurance and determination they showed in continuing the fight in the most challenging of environments to bring the Second World War to an end.”
