Garden’s ‘time team’ ready for a hole lot of fun
There will be digging with a difference at the National Botanic Garden of Wales when visitors and volunteers are invited to take part in the annual UK-wide Festival of Archaeology.
The Garden’s very own ‘time team’ will be unearthing the past in a day of hands-on fun and exploration on Saturday July 22.
Regency archaeology will be the focus of exhibitions, talks, and guided tours of the Garden’s spectacular parkland with fun for all the family guaranteed. Visitors will also be invited to explore the influences on the landscape of the Tudors, Stuarts, Georgians and Victorians.
The day is organised as part of ‘Middleton: Paradise Regained’ – the Garden’s Regency parkland restoration project – and is being run by the project team along with the newly-formed Young Archaeologists’ Club, YAC @ the Garden.
Club leader Alice Day said: “YAC members will be digging in the Brick Field on July 22nd for our celebration of the UK-wide Festival of Archaeology. The Brick Field is the area at the Garden where we think clay was dug to make bricks, which were then fired in kilns very close by.”
Alice added: “We are looking forward to going back in time.”
Other activities include making coil pots so children can experience the sensation of working with clay. Parents need not worry, though: we have T-shirts available which will keep your children clay free!
Youngsters will also have the opportunity to get creative and design their own wallpaper using a variety of techniques and budding artists will get the chance to create their very own coat of arms. There will also be a mini-dig in a compost pit where even little ones can experience the thrill of uncovering hidden objects.
You do not need to book this event. Normal Garden entry fees apply – Archaeology Festival activities are free.
The Garden is open from 10am to 6pm with last entry at 5pm.
Admission to the Garden is £10.50 (including Gift Aid donatrion) for adults and £8.75 for concessions.
Entry is FREE for Garden members and parking is FREE for all.
