Today the JCVI has announced its recommendation that the HPV vaccination is extended to include boys. There is already a vaccination programme in Wales to vaccinate girls. Our statement below.

Sarah Fuhrmann, Service Manager for Terrence Higgins Trust in Wales, says:

‘We welcome the JCVI’s recommendation that the HPV vaccination programme is extended to protect boys as well as girls from HPV. We’re now calling on the Welsh Government to act quickly to end this inequality and protect boys against both HPV-related warts and preventable cancers.

‘Wales led the way last year in introducing a national HPV vaccination programme for gay and bisexual men. We now urge the Cabinet Secretary to show the same decisiveness in acting on the JCVI’s advice and implement the roll-out of the schools-based vaccination programme to boys without delay.

‘The right to protection from HPV should not be based on someone’s gender or their ability to pay privately for the vaccine. Public health data shows that the vaccine has been effective in reducing the incidence of HPV-related cancers among girls and boys deserve that protection too.’
