Alistair Cameron to stand for Welsh Liberal Democrats in Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire

The Welsh Liberal Democrats top priority is to stop Brexit which could be devastating for Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire. We have therefore reached an historic Unite to Remain agreement with Plaid Cymru and the Green Party to elect more Remain MPs. As a result, our candidates in Carmarthen East and Dinefwr (Leena Farhat) and Llanelli (Chris Passmore) have agreed to stand aside.

Alistair Cameron, Welsh Liberal Democrat Candidate for West Carmarthen and South Pembrokeshire, said: “Brexit will seriously affect our rural communities in Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire. 60% of Britain’s food, feed and drink exports are to European Union countries and any delays or restrictions could be deeply damaging to our local farms, businesses and communities.

“Brexit will also push up prices hitting those who are most vulnerable. Restrictions on freedom of movement will make it difficult for our health service, care homes, farms and tourist industry to recruit the staff they need and we have been warned that this will lead to closures of care homes in West Wales and more pressures on our NHS.”

The Liberal Democrats calculate that the growth from remaining in the EU will give us an extra £50 billion Remain Bonus of public funds over the next five years compared with leaving. We will use this to recruit 20,000 more teachers in Britain, provide free childcare from 9 months and give every adult £10,000 to spend on skills and training throughout their lives. We will transform our mental health services by treating mental health with the same urgency as physical health.

We will tackle the climate emergency by generating 80% of our electricity from renewables by 2030 and insulating all low-income homes by 2025.

Alistair grew up near Tenby and went to Greenhill School, Tenby before going to Bristol University. He has worked in the electricity supply industry and is now a part time English teacher at a further education college. He is a former Council Leader and has been learning Welsh for 4 years.
