Mohamed Akbor is familiar face in Llanelli, particularly for those of you who frequent the Ali Raj Indian Restaurant in Trinity Road, but how many of you are aware that you are being served by a World Champion?
39-year-old Mohamed, affectionately known as ‘AK’ was born and raised in Swansea. It was whilst at School that he developed an interest in Martial Arts. His journey began when he began training in Wado Ryu Karate.
Ove the years, he extended his skills by training in a wide variety of martial arts including, Karate, Taekwondo, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Jujitsu, Judo, Brazilian Jujitsu, Boxing, MMA, along with a variety of self-defence systems.
In a career currently spanning 28 years, Akbor began competing in 1992 until 2008, but after a 10-year break, he began competing again in 2018…and what a comeback!
Along with induction into various Halls of Fame – he currently has six, Akbor is a double World Champion, Double World Silver Medallist, European Champion and European Cup Silver Medallist. He has been British Champion numerous times.
The majority of these titles were won not only alongside working in the Ali Raj, but studying for a degree at Trinity Saint David University in Carmarthen where last year he completed his studies and gained a BA (Hons) in Leadership and Management.
Specialising in Self Defence, over the years he has delivered training to corporate organisations and the third sector and during his time at Trinity Saint David, he founded and was the first President of the Self Defence Student Society.
Despite becoming World Champion in 2019, Akbor’s Silver medal in the 2018 Championship was probably the most memorable for him as he suffered a nasty ankle injury in the weeks leading up to the competition, and should not have competed at all, so to achieve a silver was nothing short of remarkable!
For Akbor and his family, such a memorable 2019 will be hard to beat, but with a CV as impressive as his, the next step in his journey will see him publish his autobiography about growing up in Wales and his martial arts career…..watch this space!
