Dear Editor

An ecological and technological challenged 21st Century Senedd Cymru

It is deplorable that in the 21st Century Senedd Cymru (Welsh Parliament) supports medieval technology to the extent of cutting down millions of trees across Wales to accommodate limited and countryside industrialising wind (mills) farms – coupled with the mindless slaughter of numerous wild birds and bats by rotating generator blades. In compounding this felony it would appear the First Minister has difficulty in comprehending that our modern technological society is TOTALLY dependent on a reliable and secure source of electrical generation, which we ALL ignore at our peril.

Additionally, Julie James, Minister for Climate Change, seems oblivious to the irrefutable fact that Large Scale Wind and Solar CANNOT offer a solution for the simple reason that the weather CANNOT be controlled, and possibly never will, so why is this Minister and others, not protesting vigorously against the proposed monstrous wind generators planned for Y Bryn – such is the calibre of our Ministers and it is an absolute disgrace! At this moment in time, the only sensible UK strategy for power generation is that of the modern relatively cheap to build and efficient CCGT gas-fired power station, which is far cleaner than its coal cousin.

This gas generation should be complimented with tidal and hydro schemes, and of course we need to start fracking to meet this requirement, and which will significantly reduce all our electricity bills. Surely Julie James recognises that fracking in the UK will not have catastrophic effects on our less than 2% of global emissions – if the UK sank beneath the sea today then over 98% of global emissions will still have to be tackled – this is an inconvenient and another irrefutable fact. It is fully recognised, that in an ideal world, fossil-fuel generation should cease and be replaced by generation such as electricity from space, tidal, and hydro, until nuclear fusion becomes a reality. But we are where we are, and I wonder if the Assembly is aware of the potential of generating electricity from SPACE?

The CASSIOPeiA Project – CASSIOPeiA stands for, Constant Aperture, Solid-State, Integrated, Orbital Phased Array, is not science fiction and the UK Government has ordered research into a multi-billion pound solar SATELLITE to match a nuclear power station’s output. The project is expected to cost between £10 billion and £15 billion potentially generating in the region of 2000 MW (2 GW) of power. A single large satellite could power the whole of Wales. No doubt readers will fully appreciate Julie James observations to my letter (but don’t hold your breath) on electrical generation strategy. Time for Senedd Cymru to join the 21st Century!
