All non-essential Swansea Council services will be paused on Monday, September 19, to mark the Queen’s state funeral.

All schools will be closed for the day – a bank holiday – as will council venues including recycling sites, the Guildhall, Grand Theatre, libraries, museums and community centres. Swansea Market will be shut.

The Civic Centre will be closed although Swansea’s book of condolence will be available there for people to sign on Monday.

Refuse collections due on Monday will be suspended. Therefore, all waste collections will run a day late throughout the week before returning to normal.

Essential services in social services such as residential care and domiciliary care will continue, along with critical day care services where needed. Cremations and burials planned for Monday will also take place.

Swansea bus station will remain open but individual bus operators may alter their normal timetables in line with the bank holiday, so passengers are advised to check before planning journeys.

This weekend’s Swansea 10k race takes place; events planned for Monday will be suspended.

Many of the country’s large employers and retailers have announced they will be closed for the day.

Cllr Rob Stewart, the leader of Swansea Council, said the authority joined the country in mourning the death of the Queen.

“As a mark of respect the council will be closing non-essential services on Monday to mark the late HM The Queen’s funeral and we are asking the public to be aware that the vast majority of our services will be closed for the day,” he said.

“We will continue to provide essential services to ensure vulnerable people are protected and our roads and transport services continue to operate.”

In Carmarthenshire, if your waste collection day is Monday, the collection will take place on Saturday, September 17 – this also affects garden, hygiene and nappy waste collections. Collections for the rest of the week will continue as normal.

Council recycling centres in Trostre, Llanelli, Nantycaws, near Carmarthen, Wernddu, Ammanford, and Whitland will all be closed on Monday.

Country parks and leisure centres will be open but restricted hours apply to leisure centres. Museums, libraries, theatres and archives will be closed.

Carmarthenshire Registration Office will be open on Monday for essential services. The crematorium in Llanelli is privately owned, so people will need to contact it and individual funeral directors.
