Nicholas Crouch at Scams.info shares useful insight on the best ways to spot fake social media followers:

“There are a number of quick ways to spot a fake social media account. One of the first things to do is examine the username – if it is very generic, contains too many numbers or very random letters, that could be a sign the profile is fake.

“Pay attention to all of the details – no profile picture, nothing written in the bio section, or spammy posts are also telltale signs for a fake social media account.

“Another thing you can do to identify a fake profile is to check other people’s interactions with it. Have a look through their followers (if they don’t have any, that might be a red flag), read through comments left on their posts (do they seem very strange?), or check the accounts that have liked their posts.

“Always try to be as safe as possible on social media. Be wary of random users messaging you out of nowhere and never provide personal details. Make sure to report any fake accounts you come across, so that those can be deleted.”
