The household item that could be the secret to a clean home

Those looking to refresh and reset their home this January are being told coffee grounds could be the secret product to achieving a clean and spotless home.

Interior experts at Online-Bedrooms.co.uk have shared how the household item can actually be used to clean certain parts of the home including grout, ovens and furniture.

Achieving a clean home doesn’t always have to be done using expensive and harsh chemicals.

The abrasive texture of coffee, along with its deodorising properties, makes it a great tool for cleaning around the house.

When mixed with water it can be used to clean ovens and grout to help remove a build up of grease, stains and dirt.

It’s also great for removing stains off of wooden furniture and can even act as a carpet cleaner.

Cat Wiltshire from Online-Bedrooms.co.uk said: “Your coffee grounds can come in handy after your morning brew and can actually be used to remove bad smells, marks and dirt from your home.

“Coffee has an abrasive texture and when mixed with water it works really well to remove tough stains like grease and dirt, making it great for cleaning things like ovens, pots and pans and bathroom grout.

“It also has deodorising properties too so it can act as a carpet cleaner and a drain cleaner when used in small amounts. Sprinkling it in the bottom of your bins too can give them a fresh scent.”

Here’s how to use coffee grounds to clean your home:

  1. Wardrobes

Easily cover scuffs on fitted wardrobes and other wooden furniture by creating a thick paste of coffee grounds and water or oil. After applying the mixture to any scratch marks, leave to sit for around 15 minutes. Wipe the area clean and buff the wood dry.

  1. Drains

Coffee’s deodorising properties make it great for cleaning out drains. Simply pour a small amount into the drain followed by some hot water.

  1. Oven

Used coffee grounds mixed with a small amount of water will create a thick paste that can be applied to the surfaces of your oven to remove stains and grease build up. Let the coffee sit for half an hour and then wipe clean with a damp cloth.

  1. Pots and pans

Coffee can be used to remove stubborn oily and greasy stains due to the coarse texture of the grounds. When washing up your pots and pans add a tablespoon of coffee grounds and gently scour away with a soft sponge to use as a natural scrub.

  1. Carpet cleaner

Generously sprinkle dry coffee grounds onto your carpets and rugs to remove any bad smells. Let the coffee sit for a few hours and then use a vacuum cleaner to clean away the grounds with the coffee acting as a natural deodorizer.

  1. Grout cleaner

Create a thick paste by mixing together used coffee grounds and water. Use an old toothbrush to scrub the mixture into the grout on the tiles in your kitchen or bathroom. The abrasive texture of coffee will help to lift dirt.
