Britons are being told small actions can make a big difference when it comes to protecting vital wildlife habitats in the UK.

Wetlands often form where land meets water and create their own unique ecosystem. They cover just 3% of the country, following a decline of 90% over the past 100 years.

Now, the team of ecologists at Arbtech.co.uk are calling on the public to make vital contributions towards the protection and conservation of wetlands.

According to the experts, a few small changes around homes and gardens could help to ensure vital habitats across the UK are protected.

Britons are being encouraged to reduce water consumption, garden responsibly, support sustainable fishing and minimise pollution.

An ecologist from Arbtech commented: “Our wetlands have been disappearing at an alarming rate and the loss of these habitats threatens wildlife, flood control and water quality. Wetlands are among the most biodiverse habitats we have, which is why we want to encourage households to help towards conservation efforts. Every day choices can help to protect the habitats – something as small as using peat-free compost can make a difference! We want Brits to understand they don’t need to completely overhaul their lifestyle in order to make a positive difference to the environment.”

Here are six ways to support wetlands, according to Arbtech

  1. Switch out your compost

Peatlands are a crucial type of wetland, so choosing a peat-free compost can help to protect fragile ecosystems. Peat-free composts contain organic materials such as bark and woodfibre and promote sustainable gardening practices.

  1. Responsible gardening

You can contribute to conservation efforts by avoiding harmful pesticides and herbicides in your garden. You can also avoid planting non-native species that can quickly become invasive, planting native species can help to preserve the ecological balance of nearby wetlands.

  1. Reduce physical pollution

By disposing of all litter appropriately and recycling whenever possible, you can stop waste from ending up in our wetlands and waterways.

  1. Collect rainwater

You can harvest rainwater to use on your garden plants to lessen the strain on natural water sources.

  1. Support sustainable practices

Opt for sustainably raised or caught seafood to reduce the impact of agriculture on our wetlands.

  1. Support initiatives

One of the most important things you can do is to support local initiatives to preserve wetlands. This could mean donating to organisations doing the work or getting involved yourself. You can also share information about the importance of wetlands and encourage friends and family to adopt sustainable practices.
