Brychan, the first blended Welsh malt whisky.

Innovative West Wales distillery, In the Welsh Wind, has taken a bold step to expand the Welsh whisky category with what is thought to be the first blended Welsh malt whisky to be brought to market.

Brychan is the first of a trilogy of blended Welsh malt whiskies featuring premium single malt whiskies from Welsh distilleries, including liquid from In the Welsh Wind’s own casks.

Blended to achieve a specific flavour profile, this first expression combines liquid from red wine, port and bourbon casks.

Ellen Wakelam, In the Welsh Wind’s founder and chief executive, said: “Bringing a blended Welsh whisky to life has been a privilege. We have been entrusted with liquid from other Welsh distilleries that we really respect and brought that together with our own single malt Welsh whisky.

“We are incredibly excited with the result and can’t wait to bring the second and third blends in this series to life over the next few months.”

Brychan’s palate offers gentle warmth of malty cereal, honey and soft spice with red fruit and chocolate. A subtle dryness offers structure without overshadowing the fruity, grain forward flavour.

The idea for a blended Welsh malt whisky was born as In the Welsh Wind considered future releases. Having sold out two limited edition single malts, the distillery wanted to create a whisky that could offer consistency, longevity and accessibility, while maintaining the quality that customers have come to expect from the award-winning brand.

Just two years after Welsh single malt secured UK GI protection, Brychan represents the next important evolution in the Welsh whisky category: a blended malt that showcases the breadth and excellence of spirit being made in Wales.
