Pioneer Claire Stott has become the first female guard in the 125-year history of the Vale of Rheidol Railway.
She combines guard duties with her role as commercial manager of the Aberystwyth-based railway which runs along the scenic Rheidol Valley to Devil’s Bridge and is a major visitor attraction in Mid Wales.
Claire joined the railway in March, bringing with her a strong background in hospitality and management from her time as general manager of Nanteos Mansion, near Aberystwyth.
“This railway has been running since 1902 and to know I am the first woman to qualify as a guard in all that time is very special,” said Claire. “I feel proud but also hopeful that it will encourage more women to think about roles in heritage railways”
Having joined the railway earlier this year as commercial manager, Claire explained that she didn’t want to work behind the scenes only. She qualified as a guard in August.
“Guards are at the heart of the railway,” she said. “They are responsible for safety, for communicating with the locomotive crew and for looking after passengers. It’s such an important role and I wanted to be part of that.
“The training was rigorous and there was a lot to learn but I enjoyed every part of it. There is a big sense of responsibility when you are the person making sure a train runs safely, but it’s also very rewarding to know you are helping to deliver the best experience for visitors.
“It is a role that combines operational discipline with customer service, and I am proud to be the first woman in the railway’s history to take it on.”
During her first season at the railway, she has helped launch Caffi Cledrau at Aberystwyth station and introduced the Cledrau Picnic for first class passengers, which have both been successful.
“Meeting people is what I enjoy most,” added Claire. “For many visitors, the guard is the person they talk to most. I love answering questions, helping families enjoy the journey and knowing I am part of their experience of this beautiful valley.”
Llyr ap Iolo, the railway’s managing director, said: “Claire’s achievement is a landmark moment for us. Her determination to contribute across both commercial and operational areas is inspiring and her appointment as the railway’s first female guard is an important chapter in our story.”
