Aberystwyth litter picker helps keep town clean “because I love Aberystwyth”

An Aberystwyth resident originally from Cardigan is quietly doing his bit to keep the town clean.

Richard Faccio, 60, spends his spare time walking around Aberystwyth collecting litter, unpaid and without seeking praise or recognition. Armed with a litter picker and a carrier bag, Richard clears rubbish from the streets, with cigarette ends being one of his biggest frustrations.

I met Richard on 6 June opposite Marks and Spencer in Aberystwyth, where he was out litter picking as part of his regular efforts to help the town.

Richard said: “I do it because I love Aberystwyth and I want to help keep it clean.”

While many people may pass by litter without thinking twice, Richard takes practical action. His work is simple, voluntary and community-minded, but it makes a visible difference to the streets used by residents, shoppers, visitors and local businesses.

Cigarette ends are a particular concern for him. They are small, easy to overlook and often left scattered on pavements, around benches, outside shops and near drains. Richard’s regular clean-ups help stop this litter building up and show how one person’s effort can improve the local environment.

Richard does not do it for attention. He does it because he cares about the place he lives.

His example is a reminder that looking after a town does not always require big campaigns or official titles. Sometimes it starts with one resident, a litter picker, a bag, and a love for Aberystwyth.
