Ever dreamed of hiring your own Welsh castle for your wedding, family celebration, group luxury stay or corporate retreat?

Glandyfi Castle, overlooking the picturesque Dyfi Estuary, between Machynlleth and Aberystwyth, is in the business of making dreams come true as an exclusive private hire venue.

Former residents of the castle were Lord Bernard Docker, chairman of Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA) and Daimler and his wife, Lady Nora Docker, described as Britain’s most flamboyant celebrity power couple during post-war austerity of the 1950s. More about the couple later.

The mock castle offers guests complete exclusivity in one of the most beautiful parts of Wales. The stunning setting on the Ceredigion-Powys border, includes indoor and outdoor ceremony spaces and luxury accommodation with 11 bedrooms included in all packages.

Glandyfi Castle can cater for everything from intimate weddings to celebrations of up to 50 guests, offering a choice of an elegant Atrium with a glass ceiling to the Dyfi Gardens for a romantic outdoor wedding ceremony.

For larger celebrations, additional guests can be accommodated with hire of a luxury sailcloth marquee. All ceremony areas within the castle are licensed for legal weddings.

Since the new Mid Wales owners took over the castle and opened it for private hire last year, 20 weddings have either been held or booked, revealed Charlie Farman, the venue’s head of marketing.

Exclusive use stays, from two nights at weekends and four nights midweek, are offered, whether it’s a wedding, celebrating a special occasion or simply spending time together.

From relaxing in the hot tub to unwinding in the media room or library, exploring woodland walks, or enjoying the formal gardens, the castle offers a variety of elegant spaces and experiences for guests to enjoy.

Glandyfi Castle also offers a distinctive setting for corporate retreats, leadership gatherings and client hosting. Designed to help teams slow down and reconnect, the castle combines relaxation and fun with spaces that encourage meaningful conversation and fresh thinking.

The castle’s beautifully appointed bedrooms offer a mix of double and twin configurations, ideal for corporate retreats and team stays. The property sleeps up to 22 guests, blending historic character with modern comfort and elegance throughout.

Private chefs and caterers create bespoke corporate dining experiences tailored to the client’s wishes. From formal three-course dinners to relaxed street food, working lunches and buffet-style service, catering can be fully customised.

Chefs who work with the castle, subject to availability, include Matt Waldron, who has worked in Michelin starred restaurants across the world and recently featured on Disney+ ‘Unchartered with Gordon Ramsay’ and BBC’s ‘The Hairy Bikers.’

To help promote the impressive property, Glandyfi Castle’s new owners have joined Mid Wales Tourism (MWT Cymru) which represents more than 600 tourism and hospitality businesses across Powys, Ceredigion and Southern Snowdonia.

“We’re keen to ensure that people know we are here and what we can offer as exclusive private hire venue,” explained Charlie. “We really do have something to shout about!

“We work with clients to ensure that they have a truly memorable experience in our Welsh castle. We can arrange a private viewing for anyone interested in hiring the castle and also hold open days throughout the year.”

Glandyfi Castle’s history began in 1812 when it was commissioned by barrister and High Sheriff of Cardiganshire, George Jeffreys for his wife. They were friends of novelist and poet, Thomas Love Peacock, whose wedding was held at the castle in 1820.

The Jeffreys family was originally from  Shrewsbury and moved to the county now known as Ceredigion in the mid-18th century to develop lead smelting mills.

Later castle residents, Lord and Lady Docker are said to have nearly bankrupted BSA with their lavish lifestyle. In addition to buying and renovating Glandyfi Castle at great expense, Lord Docker owned a one-off Daimler Stardust, the bespoke coachwork of which was finished with 5,000 sterling silver six-pointed stars.

In 1956, he was removed from the BSA board and ordered to hand back the castle and his six Daimlers.
