Eighty-one pedigree and commercial Holstein dairy cattle from a North Wales herd are to be sold at a reduction sale at Shrewsbury Auction Centre next Tuesday, July 21.
The sale, which will follow the weekly auction of dairy cattle at the market, is being conducted by Jonny Dymond, a Halls auctioneer and auction centre manager, on behalf of Elfyn, Meinir, Llion, Dafydd and Ynyr Jones from the Meinel Herd, Denbigh.
Elfyn and Meinir took the reins at their third generation family dairy farm in 2007 and have developed herd, passing on their passion for agriculture and Holstein cows to their three sons.
As the home farm was at more than maximum capacity, the family expanded and began contract farming at Claypits Farm, where there are modern cubicle sheds and infrastructure in January 2025.
The family grew the herd from 180 to 280 cows, using sexed semen and purchasing of 60 commercial Holstein cows from Gordon Dutton, who has since dispersed his herd through Shrewsbury Auction Centre.
As the contract farming agreement at Claypits Farm has ended, the family has now decided to sell 81 cattle and focus on their home farm
The herd is cubicle housed, on a full TMR diet, milked twice a day through the herringbone parlour and currently averages 35kg per day. Averages are 9,857 kilos with 4.28% butterfat, 3.37% protein and 172 cell count.
“These cows are not being pushed and their diet is focused on milk from forage which currently stands at 3,551 litres per cow,” said Mr Dymond. “With the breeding and quality of these cows, the sky is the limit on a more intense system.
“The family’s passion for their cows is only matched by their work ethic. I was blown away when I first saw them – no nonsense cows that will milk well and blend into any herd.”
The herd is BVD, Lepto and IBR vaccinated, Johnes monitored with only “green” cows in the sale.
