The completion of an award-winning project to renovate the external side of the Grade 2 Listed Penrhyn Station building on Ffestiniog Railway was marked with a ceremony earlier this month.

Two plaques were unveiled at the station which won the National Railway Heritage Award (NRHA) for a Volunteer Project last year.

The project was originally undertaken due to rotting in a lot of the external timber cladding. Work included fitting insulation and waterproofing to the walls which had to be propped up in places to renew the frame of the building.

Plastic gutters were also replaced with cast iron at the rear and chimneys were rebuilt where necessary.

The volunteers involved in the project were invited to the ceremony, including Paul Scarisbrick, a retired architect who help specify what was required to gain Listed Building approval. Other attendees included representatives from the NRHA, Network Rail, sponsors of the award and Meryl Roberts, a Gwynedd County Councillor and Penrhyn Town Council chairman.

NRHA was represented by Andy Savage, chairman and long-time Ffestiniog Railway volunteer, Robert Heywood and Gavin Johns, a project  judge.

Gavin had been given a tour of Boston Lodge by Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways general manager; Paul Lewin the previous day. The Boston Lodge project has been entered for an award this year.

Ffestiniog Railway was represented by staff and volunteers including Iain Wilkinson, Kate Knowles and Phil Hawkins. The plaques were unveiled by Sue and Tim Sharp, two of the regular project volunteers

People attending the ceremony travelled in a reserved coach on the Mountain Spirit to Tan y Bwlch where they saw a current project to renovate Station House.
