Coldplay’s long-awaited Music of the Spheres World Tour has captivated the UK with its hit performances and eco-friendly promise. Beginning in Hull’s Craven Park Stadium on the 18th of August, their final Wembley Stadium performance takes place on the rescheduled date of the 12th of September.

Despite kicking off the tour over three years ago, Coldplay never gets old, compacting nearly 30 years of music into an unmissable, 2-hour spectacle of entertainment for everyone. The show begins with Higher Power, taking fans on a journey throughout their career. From the fan favourite Paradise to the tear-jerking Fix You, they perfectly conclude with the powerful emotion of ALL MY LOVE. Accompanied by lightshows, fireworks and fan interactions, Music of the Spheres is the concert of a lifetime.

Swearing to not tour until ensuring sustainability, Coldplay’s eco-friendly show is a step towards change. Building up anticipation for their stage appearance, a video explains the beneficial differences of the concert. It’s revealed that the shows are powered by 100% renewable energy; the backstage generator runs on recycled cooking oil, whilst the show batteries are solar charged. Stages are built with low-carbon, re-usable resources such as recycled steel. Coldplay’s sustainability pledge contributes to the wonder of experiencing their music live.

This commitment to sustainability extends to audience participation. Power bikes and kinetic floors encourage attendees to cycle and dance to create solar and kinetic energy, used to power the next show. LED wristbands for attendees are made from 100% compostable, plant-based materials to be recharged and reused. The confetti is also biodegradable, and free water refill stations encourage fans to reuse bottles over single-use plastic.

Touring from country to country has made it impossible to make travel solely sustainable, but the band significantly reduced their carbon footprint by prioritising renewable fuel and routing their tour to minimise air-travel. Flying commercial when possible, charter flights are sometimes required to transport crew and equipment in time for shows. Yet to balance their air-travel, Coldplay pay a surcharge to supply Sustainable Aviation Fuel.

Coldplay have reduced their carbon emissions by over 50% since their previous tour. As touring across the world still has a significant carbon footprint, Coldplay state on their website their ‘pledge to draw down more CO2 than the tour produces supporting projects based on reforestation, rewilding, conservation, soil regeneration, carbon capture & storage and renewable energy.’

They contribute money from their tour towards these projects, such as one tree being planted for every ticket to support reforestation. Since the beginning of the tour, over 7 million trees have already been planted.

Music of the Spheres is much more than your average concert, but a lesson in love. Fans attend for the music and famous lightshows, but leave with faith in human connection. Coldplay’s Chris Martin repeatedly converses with the audience, making the effort to read each handmade sign and connect with fans through the famous ‘jumbotron’. He expresses gratitude for the inclusive array of people in attendance, raising awareness of important global issues and the need for environmental protection.

Coldplay’s personal commitment to sustainability at their own expense is inspiring, recognising how influential, wealthy figures should be doing more. Prioritising change within the concert industry to benefit our planet is the future of live performances.
