Welsh Government must bring forward post-16 skills strategy, say Welsh Conservatives

The Welsh Labour Government has been urged by Colegau Cymru to consult upon and publish a post-16 Skills Plan for Wales – a call backed today by Welsh Conservatives.

Welsh Conservative Shadow Secretary for Education, Darren Millar AM, said:

“The Welsh Government has to date steadfastly refused to reinvest the consequential from the UK Apprenticeship Levy to support the funding of apprenticeships.

“We have previously expressed our concerns that this decision may result in jobs being taken out of Wales and discouraging potential investors from bringing new jobs into Wales.

“We support Colegau Cymru’s calls for the Welsh Government to bring forward a post-16 skills strategy. The extra cash from the Apprenticeship Levy could be ring-fenced to support the delivery of this.

“A clear and targeted skills strategy, along with a funding commitment, would give Welsh colleges much-needed certainty to plan for the future.”
