“This is for my dad” Fundraiser to take on three-day gruelling challenge

Joel Hardaker is set to undertake a gruelling three-day challenge to raise funds for Ward 12 at Withybush Hospital, in memory of his late father.

Joel is heading to Tenby on 26^th – 28^th June 2026 to take part in three events at the renowned Long Course Weekend and is hoping to complete a 2.4‑mile sea swim, a 112‑mile cycle, and the Wales Marathon.

Joel is completing this challenge in memory of his father, who sadly passed away following a battle with dementia. His strength and patience shaped much of Joel’s life, so Joel wanted to honour his legacy by raising funds for families who continue to face the realities of dementia.

“People might remember my past achievements, but they don’t see the quiet battles behind closed doors,” said Joel.

“The grief, the pressure, the nights spent missing a loved one who should still be here, my dad. He was the kind of person who believed you could do, or see, or face anything if someone stood beside you. For me, that someone was always him.

“When I was younger, I was terrified of the sea. The waves felt too big, the water too deep, and the thought of stepping into it made my stomach turn. But dad wouldn’t let fear be the thing that held me back.

“I remember one day at the beach, I stood at the edge of the water, refusing to go any further, while he patiently encouraged me. He didn’t push or rush me. Instead, he held my hand, told me we’d go one step at a time, and promised he wouldn’t let go. Over the years, step by step, with his hand in mine, I walked into the water. That was my dad. Calm, patient, and always there when I needed him most. He helped me find courage I didn’t think I had.”

The family also endured the loss of Joel’s mother earlier in life, and in later years watched their father face the devastating effects of dementia.

“Through that pain, dad did everything he could to keep us strong and together. My brothers, Luke, Charles, Ollie, and I always knew he was there for us, guiding us through life the best way he could.

“Dementia slowly started to take pieces of him away. Watching someone so strong slowly fade is something no family is ever prepared for. Dementia doesn’t just affect one person, it affects everyone who loves them.

“Losing dad has left a huge space in our lives, but it’s also given us a reason to try and help others going through the same thing. If you can donate, share, or support in any way, it would truly mean the world. Every contribution helps support dementia research and care for families facing the same heartbreaking disease.

“This is for my dad. The man who helped me face the sea, and who taught me that even the biggest fears can be faced when someone you love is beside you.”
