GMB PRAISES OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION FROM LONG SERVING MEMBER
WE’RE LUCKY TO HAVE A PASSIONATE CAMPAIGNER AND A LEADING PUBLIC FIGURE REPRESENTING OUR UNION
GMB Wales and South West Region has awarded former Mayor John Rogers a long service award for his 54 years membership of the union – as well as serving his community in civic life in Taibach, Aberavon and across Neath Port Talbot as a whole.
GMB were pleased to present the award to the former councillor for Taibach recognising not only his long service, but his role at the heart of public life in Neath Port Talbot.
John joined GMB in 1964 after taking on an apprenticeship with British Gas in Llandarcy where he worked for 33 years until his retirement in 1996.
He was an active shop steward from 1976 and between 1994 and 1996 he was chairman National Chairman of the British Gas TU.
He was first elected as a Labour councillor in Taibach from 1981, serving on both the old West Glamorgan County Council and latterly Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council, serving as a cabinet member from 2004-2017 and as Mayor between 2000 and 2001.
JOHN PHILLIPS, GMB WALES AND SOUTH WEST REGIONAL SECRETARY, SAID:
“We’re really proud to recognise John’s service not only to our union, but also in recognising all his hard work as a representative of GMB in civic life.
“We’re lucky to have a passionate campaigner and a leading public figure representing our union in Neath Port Talbot and although he’s retired from the council, we know he’ll carry on representing our union’s values and ideals throughout the community and in voluntary roles he holds.
“I want to thank John for all his hard work and effort he’s put into our union, and I know he’ll continue to be an outstanding Ambassador for our union in the coming years in Neath Port Talbot.”
