Keith Davies and Rebecca Evans AM’s hosted an Assembly event for the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA), where the Carmarthenshire team picked up awards for their outstanding work.

The event provided an opportunity for Assembly Members to meet with constituents living with MND, and to sign up to the Charter – a five point plan setting out what good care looks like for people with MND and their carers.

A Carmarthenshire team were amongst those awarded with ‘Extra Mile’ Awards, having been nominated by local patients for the exceptional support they provide to families with MND. The Carmarthenshire Care Network was set up eight years ago and meets every month to discuss the care they give to patients in Carmarthenshire. They provide a multi-disciplinary approach and use their knowledge and skills to improve care and ensure the patient is at the centre of all decisions. The team consists of Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Dieticians, a Respiratory Nurse, Palliate Care Nurse and Palliative Care Consultant, as well as representatives from the MNDA.

Around 5,000 people in the UK live with MND, a fatal and rapidly progressing disease with no cure. It kills five people every day and can affect any adult at any age. Unfortunately, this condition is still little understood and therefore contributes to many people with MND not receiving the care and support they need. The MND Charter, launched in June 2012, aims to change this by raising awareness and understanding of this devastating disease.

Keith Davies AM said:

“I am delighted to be co-sponsoring this event in the Assembly. It provides a good opportunity for those living with MND across Wales and health professionals to meet Assembly Members; to talk to them about the challenges they face, share their experiences, and explore how we can all work together.”

“I am proud to have signed up to the MND Charter, and encourage all AM’s to pledge their support. I look forward to working together in the near future to achieve the vision of a Wales free of MND.”

Rebecca Evans AMsaid:

“Today was a chance to hear from people living with Motor Neurone Disease, and also the family members and loved ones who care for them.”

“Whether it is financial advice, better access to information and technology, or even helping to provide breaks and respite, carers for people living with MND also need support to maintain their own health and wellbeing.

“The Welsh Government is currently asking carers for their opinions on how they can help carers in Wales and I would encourage anyone who is a carer to get involved and have their say.”
