Chwarae Teg reveals the impact of Covid-19 on Women in Wales

Over 1,000 women responded to Chwarae Teg’s survey to share their experiences during the first period of coronavirus. The report reveals the extent of the impact on women in Wales, particularly regarding their employment status, experiences of furlough and uncertainty.

Key findings show:

  • Women were twice as likely to be key workers; more likely to be doing low-paid work, on insecure contracts in shut down sectors
  • As key workers, women experienced lack of access to appropriate well-fitting PPE
  • Women spent double the amount of time home-schooling than men
  • Unemployed women are deeply worried about their income, as the benefits system has proved inflexible and unable to meet their needs
  • Just 34% of furloughed women believe they will return to their previous role
  • In some cases women declined to be furloughed for fears about their employment

“I have gone from being a full-time working mum to now being a stay at home mum….. and feel as though having work taken away from me makes me lose my identity as an individual and who I was before becoming a mum.” research respondent

“I am concerned that there will be redundancies in my workplace in the coming months and years… and that my role will be one of the first to go because it is part-time” research respondent
