Responding to today’s Wales Governance Centre report, which found that nearly £15bn more public money was spent in the country than was raised, leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Andrew RT Davies, said:

“This alarming deficit is the product of 17 years of unambitious Labour leadership and really hammers home the urgency for change.

“Across the UK, the economy has surged forward in recent years, thanks to the stewardship of a Conservative government; but here under Labour, Wales is falling behind.

“At every turn Carwyn Jones and his Corbynistas have cowered from the opportunity to use devolved powers to effectively deliver economic prosperity and unleash Wales’ enormous potential.

“The devolution of income tax presents Wales with a historic opportunity to make the next Welsh Government more accountable for how it runs its public services and how it spends its money.

“We are unashamed in our ambition to cut income tax – a move which we believe will make Wales a more attractive to work and do business. This will in turn strengthen the Welsh economy to address poverty, raise the standard of living and drive forward growth.

“Labour’s legacy at the end of this Assembly term will be hospital closures, underachieving schools and a flagging economy.

“It is only with a competent leadership in Cardiff and Westminster, and a strong economy, that we can pay for a good health service and better schools.

“If Labour was an interview candidate for this job then it wouldn’t even make the shortlist.”
