Councillor urge Carmarthenshire drivers to avoid drink driving

As the festive season gets underway, Cllr Rob James is urging drivers in Carmarthenshire to avoid drink and drug driving.

New figures have revealed that Dyfed-Powys Police prosecuted the second highest number of drink-drivers per population1. New data from MoneySuperMarket also shows that 2.12 per every 1000 motorists in the county have a drink or drug driving conviction2.

MoneySuperMarket analysed seven million car insurance quotes run over the last 12 months. With the research finding that Carmarthenshire has one of the highest proportions of motorists with offences for drink and drug driving, Cllr James is highlighting the risk that every intoxicated driver runs when they get behind the wheel of their car.

Cllr James also called for improvements to public transport in West Wales as a means of tackling drink-driving.

Labour Deputy Leader, Cllr Rob James stated, “An intoxicated driver puts their lives, as well as the lives of others at risk, when they get behind the wheel.

“Both sets of figures highlight that drink-driving continues to be a serious issue across Carmarthenshire, causing devastation to families up and down the county.

“Whilst I accept that we need to significantly improve public transport in the region, as a means of tackling drink-driving, there is simply no excuse to drive a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. I urge local residents to take care and keep themselves, their communities and loved ones safe this festive season.”
