Homophobia Spotted in Llanelli

By Harry Wilson

A Llanelli person posted on Spotted Llanelli about how they overheard homophobic remarks outside a school. Wikipedia says that homophobia encompasses a range of negative attitudes and feelings toward homosexuality or people who are identified or perceived as being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

The post says:

“I feel this needs to be addressed. I always pick my kiddies up from school and often see a lovely gay couple do the same. Although today I heard some horrible remarks from some of the “mature women” saying they don’t want their children mixing with their child laughing and sniggering away.”

“Making remarks such as faggots and gay lords. I think this is horrible. I understand we still live in a world where it’s not accepted, but please keep your comments to yourself. If I could hear you, they probably could of too!

“It’s disrespectful. Just think if the shoe was on your foot and they were making remarks about you and your kids. I’ve spoken to them both myself and probably the kindest people I know. It’s such a shame adults need to judge especially when they should be mature enough to keep their mouth shut. Grow up!”

The post has drawn positive comments from local people horrified at the post, unable to believe that such comments could be made in 2019.  Click here to view post, https://www.facebook.com/SpottedLlanelli/posts/2543230082385143

‘Unfortunately the children of these individuals are going to learn from their parents…. they will see that it is acceptable to bully and judge people, because this is what the parents are projecting. I am happy to say I have a daughter, who has two mothers, she is in a happy and loving environment at school & home where she is never judged and is supported and educated like any other child should be… I am sure in years to come she will become an independent and non judgmental young lady and will continue to make her mother’s proud daily.’

‘Challenge their attitudes in a polite way and ask why they think its ok to verbally abuse them and do they realise what they might be doing to the child in question – it’s not the child’s issue – the parental view is passed on to the child, who in turn passes it on to peers which then can end up as a bullying issue. really sorry to see this happening in this day and age.’

A spokesperson for Llanelli LGBTQ+ Support said that they were pleased to see that so many people were horrified by the comments.  However, this shows that some people still see homophobia as the norm and it’s something that the group aim to tackle.  People don’t realise that LGBTQ+ people still have to live with things like these every day and everyone needs to work together to highlight any cases of homophobia.
