Responding to Carers UK research on unpaid carers providing more care for their loved ones during the coronavirus outbreak, Cllr Ian Hudspeth, Chairman of the Local Government Association’s Community Wellbeing Board said:
“Our care system could not survive without the contribution of unpaid carers, who provide vital support for thousands of people every day, even more so now during the current crisis.
“Councils fully recognise their crucial role during this hugely challenging period. Unpaid caring can be extremely rewarding but even in normal times we know it can also be a real strain – emotionally, physically and financially, which is why councils are committed to doing all they can to support them.
“Their extra efforts to support the most vulnerable in our society during this most difficult of times should be recognised, especially as they are picking up extra responsibilities usually undertaken by paid carers.
“Unpaid carers, social care staff and other council workers all need access to reliable supplies of quality PPE, as well as increased rapid and comprehensive testing.”
