How the UK will spend the most money on who and what this Christmas

The study unveils that whilst the UK might be a nation of generous gift-givers, they also truly love to treat themselves. Respondents admitted they regularly buy themselves gifts as a little “pick me up”, finding small ways to bring joy into their lives more often rather than waiting for a special occasion to treat themselves.

  • 43% of women said they would buy a gift for their friend for Christmas, whereas only 35% of men said they would.

  • The UK population spend on average £9,639,813,562 (£142 pp) on a single gift for their partner, friend or family member.

  • A quarter of respondents said they spend more money on gifts for their pets than for the humans in their lives.

  • Phrases like ‘dog gifts’ are being searched for nearly 4,500 times per month.

  • The average time to gift a diamond to a partner is after 2.5 years.

  • There has been a 1500% increase in searches for ‘sustainable gifts’ since 2017.

  • 26% of respondents said they are willing to spend between £51-£100 on themselves compared to just 14% willing to spend this same amount on a friend.

  • Those living in Greater London spend the most money on themselves, spending £150 on self-gifting on average.
