STAYCATION INDULGENT HABITS REVEALED:

WELSH FAMILIES’ TOP PICKS FOR THEIR FIRST STAYCATION SHOP

With research from The Delicious Dessert Company establishing that seven in ten (72%) Welsh people are going on a staycation in the UK this summer – and 38% are taking their break in Wales – new findings highlight that that people from Wales are taking a spin on these sugary staples on their first shop of their staycations.

As families head to cottages, caravans and campsites, their priority is often to stock up on indulgent treats, as the first shop of the trip is a rare opportunity for families to treat themselves. The Delicious Dessert Company asked respondents which special treats they would buy for themselves and their families in this first shop.

When it comes to the top choices for sweet treats, patriotism wins supreme for people from Wales: 24% would buy Welsh cakes, coming just above cheesecake (21%), shortbread (18%), and luxury ice cream (16%).

While making it a point to treat themselves on holiday, staycationers from Wales are also sharing sweetness across the family.

·      Mums are the sweetest

Moving past the self-love, mums are the top recipients of holiday treats, with three in four (75%) people heading for the sweet aisle to buy something for their mums. Keeping it crumbly, top treats bought for mums included scones (17%), Welsh cakes (16%), and cream cakes (14%).

·      Dads come in second

Although not the top favourites compared to Mums, Dads also enjoy their fair share of treats, with 73% buying something for their dad. Welsh cakes remain a top choice (16%) for a sweet treat gift, but people were also likely to go savoury and buy their dads some luxury cheeses (14%), in addition to the usual fruitcake (12%), and scones (11%).

·      Siblings: sweet or sour?

In contrast, Welsh staycationers were the one of the least likely UK regions to buy a sweet treat for their siblings, with only 68% getting something for their sisters, and fewer (66%) for their brothers. When they do, fudge (11%) and dessert pots (11%) are the top choice for brothers, whereas sisters are more likely to receive ice cream (15%) or cheesecake (12%). Whether they share these treats is a different question!

·      Parents treat their kids

Parents are not shy about indulging their children, with seven in ten (74%) using the first shop on holiday to buy something sweet for their children. Three in ten (30%) would grab some pick n mix for their youngsters, with ice cream (23%) being next on the list. Also popular were sugary pastries like doughnuts or yum-yums (18%) and sweet popcorn (18%).

Claire Smith Head of Insight at The Delicious Dessert Company commented: “It’s such good news that so many people are planning a staycation this summer in the UK, and that more are treating themselves and their families during the break. With the summer season stretching on – despite the inconsistent weather – it’s wonderful to see how old and new tastes are coming together on the first staycation shop. We want to bring staycationers the relaxing treats they deserve, whether on a sunny day out, or sheltering from the British rain.”
