A survey of film buffs, commissioned by Beavertown, found that 3 in 10 (31%) of those living in Wales watch horror films when they need something to cheer them up, while 82% say they provide an escape from reality.

According to the survey, the genre is also seeing a clear rise in popularity ā€” on average, people in Wales watch 38 horror films a year, with 54% saying that the number of horror films they watch increases during October.

Beavertown celebrated this nationwide obsession with Halloween films with a spine-chilling ‘Dead Carpet’ event at London’s Prince Charles Cinema. Horror icons like Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Bride of Frankenstein strutted down a blood-red carpet, marking the launch of “Beavertown Screamings” ā€” a week-long marathon of horror classics from October 23rd to 31st.

The study also revealed what keeps horror fans coming back for more. For 44% of Welsh people, it’s the thrill and suspense that make horror films so appealing, while 34% can’t get enough of the storytelling and plot twists, and 32% love the scares and jumps.

When it comes to how Wales residents like to watch horror films, there’s no one-size-fits-all. While 25% enjoy the thrill of watching horror alone, 39% prefer the comfort of company to share the suspense.

As for what makes a great horror flick for Welsh people, psychological fear (53%), creepy atmospheres (44%), and paranormal entities (29%) were the most popular elements.

In terms of all-time greatest horror films according to the Welsh,Ā The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Scream (1996), Paranormal Activity (2007), and The Shining (1980)Ā topped the list.
