In the week ending 24 January 2025 (Week 4 2025), there were 13,956 deaths registered in England and Wales. This was a decrease from 14,679 in the previous week (Week 3 2025).
The number of deaths registered in Week 4 2025 was 1.8% higher than the expected number (252 more deaths).
In Week 4, 18.1% of registered deaths involved influenza or pneumonia (2,530 deaths). Coronavirus (COVID-19) was involved with 0.6% of deaths (85 deaths).
In the same week, influenza or pneumonia was the underlying cause of 7.0% of deaths (978 deaths). COVID-19 was the underlying cause of 0.5% of deaths (63 deaths).
In Week 4 2025, there were 15,632 deaths registered in the UK.
The number of deaths registered in week 4 in Northern Ireland was affected by the closure of registration offices for a day due to Storm Éowyn.
