As this week’s excellent annual Urdd Youth Eisteddfod came to an end, there has been an inevitable ongoing debate and discussion about the future of the Welsh language and its sad current lack of usage by some pupils, amongst themselves, attending Welsh medium schools.

At the same time, it is ironic that within a major UK tabloid newspaper there has been a raging debate about how the English language is evolving by changes within England.

Even Susie Dent, the word goddess of TV Countdown fame, has been dragged in. The theory of evolution was championed in Wales, before Darwin, by Alfred Russell Wallace. Very few species, like Sharks and Horsetail plants, stagnated without change.

So, coming back to the Welsh language, its evolution and future survival is most welcome as long as it lives and thrives by usage amongst our younger generation. Language purists of English and Welsh should both welcome evolution and vitally our language future survival.

I. Richard, Clydach, Abertawe.
