Llandovery Farmers Market goes Great, Big and Green

The Great Big Green Week starts on Saturday 7 June across the country. Llandovery Farmers Market is collaborating with Ynni Sir Gar, Llandovery Climate Action and The Repair Cafe to demonstrate ways to be green in your everyday lives. Customers can expect a wide range of delicious locally produced food from 10-2pm on Market Square. Entertainment will be provided by acoustic guitar duo The Golden Geckos from Lampeter from 12pm. The Llanymddyfri EV community car project will be on show as one of the latest in a string of successful car club projects across Wales. The Repair Cafe is a great way to keep your treasured but damaged items whilst saving money and unnecessary waste. 

Market Manager Raoul Bhambral said,

“Saturday 7 June will be all about doing things in a Green way – particularly around the circular economy where resources are used wisely, waste is minimized and people’s pockets and the planet are protected.

Support local businesses by buying directly from the producer and put your money straight into their pockets. Bringing treasured but damaged items to The Repair Café so they can be fixed instead of you buying new is a great saving. And if you need a temporary second car or just want to hire one for several hours then the Llanymddyfri EV community car project is for you.

All these activities help reduce carbon emissions, support the local economy and the planet while helping you to save money. Just what the Great Big Green Week is about. Come along and find out more!”

The market will feature an array of fresh vegetables, mushrooms, a range of meats, cakes, honey, sheep and goats cheese, plants, flowers and dog treats. Street food will be available from small cold snacks like pies and sausage rolls up to burgers and pizzas.  

Car-sharing in Wales is gaining real momentum, and TrydaNi’s Car Clubs are leading the way with the help of cutting-edge technology from The Mobility Factory.

Sioned Haf from Ynni Sir Gar said, 

“Car sharing looks set to keep growing – helping more people get where they need to go, without the burden of car ownership. In Wales, the Car Club now has 172 active members, and we’re seeing up to 15 new sign-ups each week.”

The Repair Café was established by Llandovery Climate Action and is hosted by Pethau Pawb, the Library of Things where people can rent household, electrical, play or luxury items at a low cost instead of buying them for themselves.

Alan New from Llandovery Climate Action said,

“Llandovery’s Repair Cafe grew out of a desire to address the challenges of the climate emergency in a practical, locally relevant way. The Llandovery Climate Action group thought that reducing waste and items going to landfill was worth doing. This helps promote a circular economy by avoiding unnecessary purchases of new items. Our volunteers will do their best to help you and, if you like, you can watch and learn how to repair items yourself too! 

Maybe it’s not even broken – just damaged. For example, only last month the market manager Raoul brought in his treasured Thundercats bag that was on the verge of falling apart. We mended it and he was delighted! He says it’s ‘good as new now’.”
